Reading Olympics
The goal of the Reading Olympics is to increase students' reading for enjoyment. Students collaborate with their teammates to read forty to fifty books that have been selected by a committee of librarians, reading specialists and classroom teachers. These professionals read the books and write questions which teams of students answer during the competition. The Olympics are primarily a celebration of reading rather than a contest. All participants are awarded ribbons. Since the teams generate much excitement about this event, the experience is rewarding for everyone involved.
LEAP Leadership Roles (5th Graders)
LEAP Ambassador
LEAP Ambassadors are students who are proud to embody and uphold our LEAP expectations. They will work together to identify important issues in our school and community to work towards positive solutions. Ambassadors will use their voices in classroom lessons and with students to make our LEAP community a place of belonging where all members feel included and important. Ambassadors are students who recognize when something is wrong and act to make it right. They will participate in PBIS meetings with staff to plan and implement our monthly LEAP celebrations. They will help with bulletin boards around the school to highlight many of the Wissahickon cultural calendar themes. They will support bullying prevention and No Place for Hate efforts at LGE.
LEAP Ambassadors will meet two times a month at recess. Students interested in becoming a LEAP Ambassador fill out a LEAP Leadership application with an added LEAP Ambassador section.
LEAP Safety
LEAP Safety leaders will help all students to ensure a safe arrival to school and dismissal from school. On the bus, LEAP Safety leaders are expected to encourage students to stay in their assigned seats and reinforce bus safety rules (remaining seated, keeping body in own space, being considerate/inclusive of others, using kind words/manners, listening to the bus driver, and speaking in a Zone 1-2 volume). LEAP Safety leaders help the driver keep a safe and orderly bus. LEAP Safety leaders will also be assigned to posts around school to help with arrival and/or dismissal. This may involve monitoring a hallway in the morning or afternoon, supporting Kindergarten at dismissal, leading the walkers, and more. The role will be to support the on-duty teachers to make sure that students are showing expected behaviors in the hallways during arrival and dismissal time.
LEAP Safety leaders will meet at least once a month during recess. Students interested in becoming a LEAP Safety will fill out a LEAP Leadership application with an added LEAP Safety section.
LEAP Assistant
LEAP Assistants help various Lower Gwynedd teachers in many ways in their classrooms. Students will be assigned to a classroom or an Encore teacher throughout the week. If you assume this leadership role, your assigned teacher will review with you the responsibilities that you will have to complete.
LEAP Assistants will meet at least once a month during recess. Students interested in becoming a LEAP Assistant will fill out a LEAP Leadership application.
LEAP Tutor
LEAP Tutors will assist younger students academically by helping with word work, letter recognition, sight words, fact fluency, and any other activities that the teacher provides. If you assume this leadership role, your assigned teacher will review with you the responsibilities that you will have to complete.
LEAP Tutors will meet at least once a month during recess. Students interested in becoming a LEAP Tutor will fill out a LEAP Leadership application.

LGE LEAP winners are selected from classrooms in recognition of their ability to Lead by Example, Expect Respect, Act Responsibly, and Play and Work Safely. Each student is given a special certificate, signs their name on the LEAP wall of fame and gets to choose a prize.
