Social Studies

In elementary social studies, students engage in a study of their place in the community and world with a focus on history, geography, economics, and civics and government. Students are engaged in classroom discussions, simulations and explorations, research, digital learning, literature selections, as well as reading and writing assignments. Lessons by grade level include:

• Being a Good Citizen, Workers in Society, My Country
• Rules and Laws, Meeting People, Our Changing Country
• The World Around Us, People from Long Ago, People in the Marketplace
• Regions of the US, Pennsylvania Landforms, History, Government, and Economics
• Early Explorers, Colonial Life, Tensions with England

In middle school social studies, students engage in a study of their place in the community and world with a focus on history, geography, economics, and civics and government. • 6th Grade: Ancient Civilizations
• 7th Grade: American History: Revolution through Civil War
• 8th Grade: American History: Reconstruction through World War II

The Social Studies program prepares students to think and write analytically through a historical framework.  Students will learn how to question and formulate original opinions while being exposed to a chronological history of several focus points.  It is intended that every student be aware of ongoing global events in order to become part of an increasing global environment.  Along this journey, students will be exposed to government, economics, geography, historiography and other social sciences.  Students will be required to take the following year-long courses, each available on the academic and honors levels in 9th through 11th grades.  Students will need to take either a full year or two semesters of Social Studies during their 12th grade year.
